Musical Theater

In addition to popular music genres, Chelsea is available to work with her students on honing their musical theater skills, from vocal technique, to auditions, acting skills, and more.  Many middle and high school aged students will have opportunities to perform in school and community theater plays, and Chelsea is here to help you succeed in all of your theatrical endeavors!

Chelsea's students have appeared in lead and supporting roles in productions such as "The Little Mermaid," "Willy Wonka," "In the Heights," "All Shook Up," "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Carrie the Musical," "Beauty and the Beast," "Legally Blonde," "Annie," "Urinetown," "The Pirate Queen," "Catch Me If You Can," "Little Shop of Horrors," and more, and have been part of shows at the Morristown Mayo PAC, Union County PAC, Paper Mill Playhouse Conservatory, Centenary College, Brundage Park Playhouse, the Growing Stage, Chester Theater Group,  and of course school shows.  Chelsea's students have also received nominations and special recognition by the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards, and attended Paper Mill Playhouse's Summer Conservatory Program.

Getting involved in your school's drama club is an excellent activity for any aspiring musician.  Like any performance, theater helps to increase self-esteem and confidence.  Chelsea strongly encourages her students to take part in any performance opportunities that come their way!

Audition Preparation

Chelsea is here to help you prepare whenever you have an audition coming up.  Audition preparation for musicals will not only include learning the song(s) thoroughly, but will also include emotional execution and acting tips.  Chelsea will also give advice on audition etiquette, such as what is appropriate to wear to an audition.  Chelsea can also offer advice on creating theater resumes.  In addition to preparing for a specific audition, students may work on building up a repertoire of audition songs at any point during lessons.  This way, when an audition comes up, you have something prepared in advance that can be reviewed and used for the audition!

Theater History

Like any area of study, it is always good to have knowledge of the history of musical theater when entering theater yourself.  Through assignments and learning songs, Chelsea will help you learn about how musical theater got its start, what sub-genres you may find in showtunes and how to sing them, and what composers and performers you should become familiar with.  Students who wish to pursue musical theater seriously should have this foundation in the history of theater, as it will help aide them in building a solid repertoire of music.

Got the Part?

After you've landed the part, the work really begins!  In addition to helping you learn your songs, Chelsea can provide help with learning lines, memorization skills, emotional execution, and of course - acting skills!  Students are welcome to work on anything regarding their plays during lessons.  Acting skills are important for singers of all styles of music - but it is extremely important for those singing musical theater.  Chelsea will tailor your lessons to fit the needs of your performance!
